Photo: Shawn Levangie (CME Chair), Mike Pittman (Clearwater), Keith Lohnes (Clearwater), Michelle Johnston-Lazaratos (NRC-IRAP) and Ian Smith (Clearwater) at the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters recognition event for innovation.

The Natural Resources Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) Regional Awards for New Technology recognizes innovative excellence in the development, adoption, and application of new technology in process or products. These awards provide businesses with an opportunity to demonstrate their unique and innovative excellence in the development and application of new technologies. The awards are delivered in collaboration by Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) and NRC-IRAP regionally across Canada. Clearwater was recognized for its development and implementation of Automatic Shucking Technology (AST).

As a finalist for the region of Atlantic/Nunavut Region, Clearwater is recognized for its consistent quality, wide diversity and reliable delivery of premium wild, eco-labeled seafood, including scallops, lobster, clams, coldwater shrimp, crab and groundfish.

Automatic Shucking Technology (AST) replaces the manual method of shucking scallops by making use of several different mechanical processes combined in a relatively compact piece of equipment that withstands the rigours of offshore fishing. Already a leader in frozen-at-sea technology, which provides the highest quality scallops available, Clearwater’s development and commercialization of AST further advances the offshore fishing platforms from frozen-at-sea vessels to true factories at sea.

We foresee a long-term positive ROI that will be realized through labour and operations savings and better product quality.
